GROOVED COILING SLEEVES FOR MINE WINDERS
Global leaders in sleeve design & manufacture
For 35 years EET has designed and manufactured grooved coiling sleeves for mine winders – from 600 mm single-drum winch sleeves to 7.2 m double-drum sets – in our dedicated sleeve facility in Sebenza, Edenvale.

OVERVIEW
Grooved sleeves that guide every layer of rope
A grooved coiling sleeve is a set of machined steel half-shells bolted onto the winder drum. The grooves guide the rope as it coils, so each wrap and each layer seats correctly and the rope is protected from crushing and wear.
Each sleeve set is designed around the customer’s drum, rope and site parameters – one of only three manufacturers worldwide, EET leads South African supply.
Parallel sections
transform through half pitched crossovers on 180 degrees apart
Crossover sections
produce a single pitched rope groove per drum revolution using x-overs counterbalanced, 180° apart
Risers
lift the rope onto the next layer
Rope entry & end fillers
formed into the end-filler rods by hand grinding to achieve a suitable transition for the rope

MANUFACTURING
Three dedicated manufacturing centres
The EET Sleeves division runs three modified lathe complexes, each set up for grooving coiling sleeves.

Schiess modified lathe complex
Ø7.3 m × 2.5 m
Maximum diameter × width. Our largest machine, for full double-drum sleeve sets.

NEWLY UPGRADED
Liebherr modified lathe complex
Ø5 m × 2.2 m
Maximum diameter × width.

Zerbst modified lathe complex
Ø1.5 m × 3 m
Or Ø3 m × 2 m wide. Suited to smaller winch and long, narrow sleeves.
OUR PROCESS
How we build a sleeve set
Almost everything happens in-house. EET outsources only two parts of a grooved coiling sleeve: the plate rolling and the sleeve bolts – both to tight specifications.
01
Design
Our engineers design each sleeve configuration to the customer’s criteria. The drawing office submits design drawings for approval against site parameters and SANS 10294 Annex B.
02
Plate & rolling
S355 steel plate, UT tested and mill-cert approved to SANS 50025 / EN 10025:2004, CNC-rolled by a trusted sub-contractor to ±5 mm – even on 5.5 m dia × 2 m wide half sleeves.
03
Mandrel build
Qualified boilermakers and welders build a mandrel that emulates the hoist drum, strong enough to carry the full mass and machining stress of one drum set of sleeves.
04
Fit to ±1 mm
The rolled plates are fastened to the machined mandrel, bringing them to within ±1 mm tolerance for grooving.
05
Groove & finish
Grooving on one of our three lathe complexes, then delicate blending, chamfering and de-burring of bolt holes and sleeve joints, and forming of the riser, rope entry and end filler rods.
06
Bolt, document & dispatch
Forged-head BS 970 817M40 condition ‘U’ bolts in M24 or M30 countersunk sets. A complete Data Book goes with every set before loading for transport.
